06:16 CET - Our match report is just moments away, but in the meantime let's recap what we know about the Round of 16 so far courtesy of our World Cup calendar:

Saturday, July 4

19.00 CET – Canada vs Morocco (Match 90) Houston, USA

23.00 CET – Paraguay vs France (Match 89) Philadelphia, USA

Sunday, July 5

22.00 CET – Brazil v Norway (Match 91) New York City, USA

Monday, July 6

02.00 CET – Mexico vs England/D. R. Congo (Match 92) Mexico City, Mexico

06:07 CET - Mexico have earned themselves one more home game, where they will play the winner of England v D. R. Congo in Mexico City on July 5, before the entire tournament heads to the USA from the quarter-finals onwards.

06:02 CET - MEXICO WIN! They become the first team since Italy in 1990 (also a host nation) to win their first four World Cup games without conceding a goal. But it was the front third where they were the most dazzling.

05:57 CET - Ecuador's Piero Hincapie has been sent off for covering his mouth in a confrontational situation. He can have no complaints about the outcome - it was a clear breach of the new rule.

05:53 CET - Ecuador have seven minutes of stoppage time left to save their World Cup. They're fighting but not doing nearly enough to get back into this game.

05:45 CET - The excitement is fast building around the stadium as the supporters come closer to the realisation that their nation could win a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1986.

Ecuador have held nearly 70% of possession in the second half but have created fewer chances than Mexico despite that.

05:30 CET - The two Mexican centre backs both came agonisingly close to making it 3-0 before the hydration break, with Ecuador's goalkeeper keeping his side in with a fighting chance. The momentum graph shows just how big those chances were.

05:07 CET - The second half commences with Angelo Preciado and Yaimar Medina coming in for Alan Franco and Joel Ordonez. Preciado made the first cross of the game but it was not an accurate one.

04:51 CET - Half-time at Estadio Azteca. The wait was long but the football itself went by quickly. Mexico are halfway to recording their first World Cup knockout victory in 40 years.

Half-Time Stats
Half-Time StatsOpta by StatsPerform

04:44 CET - The rain has subsided as the first half enters stoppage time. It hasn't been all one-way traffic, but similarly to the previous game involving France, Mexico have just been very hard to shut down.

04:31 CET - Estadio Azteca was a sea of noise even before Mexico doubled their lead and now it's truly bananas. Raul Jimenez intercepted a pass in the final third, linked one-two with Quinones and moved to number two on Mexico's all-time goalscoring list with a powerful shot.

Jimenez gleefully slides across the wet turf on his chest as the rain returns to the venue, but we can't see a single supporter heading for shelter.

04:27 CET - "Quarter time" as the Americans would call it. Most people call it a hydration break. We call it a travesty, and so does the entire Mexican bench as the referee stopped play at what they believed was not an appropriate time.

04:22 CET - GOLAZO DE QUINONES! Mexico convert their early dominance into a thoroughly deserved lead. Quinones gets past a high defensive Ecuador press in his own half, advances into the box, and slams it past the keeper into the back of the net.

Ecuador's defence moved a little too far forward there. Quinones would have been in an offside position were he not standing in his own half. He was one foot on the correct side of the halfway line and had an advantage in the foot race to the ball.

04:17 CET - Six shot attempts inside 15 minutes for Mexico and none have been on target. The sixth was by far the closest: Gilberto Mora attempted to curl one inside the right post but it just missed shaving the outside of the post.

Moments later at the 17-minute mark, Yeboah nutmegged Montes and his shot was fingertipped into the post by Mexican keeper Rangel. Mexico win a goal kick and it would have been reversed by VAR had the rules allowed.

04:06 CET - A brilliant cross from Romo found the head of Jimenez who mistimed his shot at goal and sprayed it wide. Romo has been very busy down the right flank so far.

04:00 CET - The match has finally kicked off!

An early goal to Mexico would not be a surprise based on the way they have started, with superior energy, hunger and plenty of expressive freedom in the opening minutes.

03:55 CET - National anthems are being sung loudly and proudly by both teams and by a crowd letting out the frustrations of having to wait an additional hour for this momentous game. The noise around the stadium after Mexico's anthem was off the charts.

03:30 CET - Players are beginning their warm-ups with 30 minutes left until the new kick-off. Fortunately, they had not begun warming up before the kick-off was delayed, so their preparations have not been immensely impacted by the delay.

03:00 CET - The latest news we are hearing is that kick-off has been rescheduled for 8:00pm local time (04:00am CET, 9:00pm in Ecuador), with player warm-ups to commence shortly.

02:40 CET - The latest information is that, well, there is no information. Current conditions mean a kickoff time cannot yet be confirmed.

02:20 CET - Kickoff has been delayed in Mexico City due to a severe thunderstorm. We're seeking further information about a potential restart time.

01:30 CET - 90 minutes until kickoff at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and the lineups for both teams are in!

Erik Lira and Raul Jimenez return to the centre of Mexico's attacking engine with the team continuing with the 4-3-3 that was adapted from the second game of the tournament.

Ecuador's starting side is unchanged from the one that defeated Germany 2-1 on matchday three.

01:10 CET - You can catch our match report here if you missed France's very classy and impressive dismantling of Sweden.

00:58 CET - Kylian Mbappe is our Player of the Match with a rating of 9.4 out of 10 on our new and improved player ratings system.

Michael Olise was not far behind with 9.1, and one could make a very solid case that he was even more instrumental to today's victory than Mbappe. Had he scored himself, he probably would have rated 9.5.

00:53 CET - The full-time whistle puts Sweden out of their misery. They've got a lot to be proud of after making their long awaited return to the World Cup, particularly their 5-1 demolition of Tunisia on matchday one.

France will play Paraguay in Philadelphia on Independence Day (July 4).

00:48 CET - This game is into stoppage time and unfortunately there will be no late twists. Sweden are just pushing for something to smile about before full-time.

There are not many national teams, if any, who would have been able to overcome this French performance today. They are deserved World Cup favourites now.

00:37 CET - The English world feed broadcast tells us France are the first team in World Cup history to score 3+ goals in five consecutive World Cup games - a run that started with their 2022 final loss to Argentina, one of the great World Cup games.

00:33 CET - A slick, smooth and heavenly Kylian Mbappe brings Sweden's tournament to an end! They're only getting better as the match - and the tournament - wears on. Olise and Mbappe again link up together, and there was a very cheeky backheel from Mbappe earlier in the buildup. He's just toying with this opposition now.

00:30 CET - France should have been leading 3-0 after Mbappe and Olise found themselves in a 2-on-1 situation following a very quick transition out of defence. Olise's first touch inside the box was perhaps a fraction too heavy and it allowed the Swedish keeper to charge and shut it down.

00:25 CET - Time for a hydration break and the French fans are partying in the sun. France are in full control of their destiny and this contest.

00:10 CET - It looks like France are off to a Round of 16 meeting with Paraguay! They're oozing class against a brave but helpless Swiss defence. They quickly scythed their way through the middle of the Swedish formation with a couple of lovely passes.

00:05 CET - The second half is now LIVE!

23:49 CET - That’s half-time at the MetLife Stadium, and although Sweden started brightly in the first few minutes, France have been on top basically since then, hogging the ball wth 71% possession and peppering the Swedish goal with shots - they had 15 shots in the half with six on target and a couple hitting the post.

They lead 1-0 thanks to Mbappe's goal late in the half, but really could be 3-0 up already, which the Swedes will have to take as some kind of fuel to mount a response in the second period.

23:45 CET - It's been coming, and finally, France have scored to make it 1-0 at the MetLife. And who else but Kylian Mbappe, for his fifth goal of the tournament and 17th in World Cup history!

It was a lovely goal too, with Mbappe jinking in from the left, making an angle and bending the ball exquisitely in at the far side.

23:21 CET - We thought we had a Kylian Mbappe goal for a second there, but it has rightly been ruled out for offside!

Just to remind you of the golden-boot race, Mbappe is on four goals for the tournament along with Ousmane Dembele. Lionel Messi is leading the charts with six goals, and Erling Haaland is now in second place on five after his winner this evening. Who will end the tournament on top, though?

23:12 CET - Just a little over 10 minutes in between France and Sweden, and there hasn't been much in the way of big chances, but the French have been dominating the ball, as expected. They look resplendent too in their tricolour kit in the blazing east-coast sunshine!

22:55 CET - The French and Swedish teams are out at the MetLife Stadium for the anthems, which means kick-off is around the corner!

21:37 CET - The lineups are in for France vs Sweden, and the many big names are all present.

France's lethal attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise are joined by Bradley Barcola rather than Desire Doue, while Anthony Elanga lines up alongside Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak for Sweden.

21:00 CET - Norway march into the last 16!

It's heartbreak for the Ivory Coast, who were excellent and edged the contest on the whole, but as he so often does, Haaland made the difference.

Next up for him and his teammates is a clash with Brazil.

20:46 CET - ERLING HAALAND DOES IT AGAIN!

The striker has been invisible for most of the game, but as if so often the case, he finds himself in the right place at the right time, tapping in a cross from Patrick Berg to restore his side's lead!

Four minutes to go - is that the winner?

20:36 CET - Amad Diallo levels things up!

It's another great goal, with the Man Utd man getting the ball on the right, playing a lovely one-two, jinking between Norway defenders in the box and firing in! 1-1!

20:22 CET - Man Utd winger Amad Diallo has been brought on along with Nice's Elye Wahi as their nation up the tempo in their efforts to equalise.

30 minutes to go.

20:17 CET - It's been a strong opening 10 minutes of the second half for the Ivory Coast. They're dominating possession and have started to cause the Norway backline some problems.

20:08 CET - The second half is underway! Can the Ivorians turn things around?

19:52 CET - That's that for the first half, and it's the Europeans who head down the tunnel in the lead.

The Europeans were the better team from their goal onwards, starting to control possession and create more openings, but there's been very little to choose between the two sides.

19:41 CET - Norway take the lead with an absolute beauty!

Antonio Nusa picks the ball up on the left wing, cuts inside and curls the ball into the top of the far corner in stunning fashion! What a goal!

19:27 CET - At the first hydration break of the match, there's little to report. The Ivory Coast have looked the slightly more dangerous, but neither side have gone close yet.

19:01 CET - We are underway at the immense AT&T Stadium in Dallas for the Round of 32 match between Norway and the Ivory Coast! As ever, you can follow every kick with our live audio commentary via the link above.

17:35 CET - The lineups are in for the first match of the day, between Ivory Coast and Norway, which kicks off at 19:00 CET. Unlike against France, Erling Haaland is starting this one, and that's to be expected with progression to the Round of 16 on the line in Dallas! Martin Odegaard is also back in the Norway team from the start, but Julian ‌Ryerson is injured.

The Ivorians have made three changes with Ghislain Konan and Emmanuel Agbadou returning to the defence after being rested against Curacao. Christ Inao Oulai takes the place of Amad Diallo as the winger is sacrificed for more strength in the middle. See the starting XIs below:
