Anders Antonsen heads into next week's Denmark Open in Odense fresh off a tournament victory.
After a thrilling, nail-biting finish, the Dane defeated Japan's Yushi Tanaka 16-21, 21-16, 27-25 to win the final of the Super 500 Arctic Open.
Both players squandered multiple match points during a nerve-wracking and grueling conclusion played at a high level.
This final marked Antonsen's 22nd appearance on the BWF World Tour, and he now boasts 12 victories. Two of these have come in 2026, following his win at the Thailand Open in May.
Sunday got off to a poor start for the Dane. He was constantly playing catch-up in the first set, and from a 15-15 tie, Tanaka pulled decisively ahead.
Anders Antonsen's coach—his brother, Kasper Antonsen—called for a faster pace, and in the second set, the Dane gained a much better grip on the match.
Several rallies became very long, a dynamic that seemed to favor the Dane. The Japanese player was gasping for air and committed several major errors, allowing Antonsen to level the match and force a third and deciding set.
It turned into a very tight and grueling affair. A couple of net-cord shots went the Dane's way, though he also felt deeply frustrated after a call went in the Japanese player's favor.
Initially, this seemed to provide the perfect fuel for Antonsen, but Tanaka refused to back down and even held the first match point. Antonsen, however, boldly tackled the task and survived by the skin of his teeth several times during a nerve-wracking conclusion—punctuated only by pauses to wipe away sweat—before finally securing the victory.
