On Sunday, Mia Blichfeldt secured one of the biggest victories of her career.
The 29-year-old Dane defeated the top-seeded Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-17, 21-13, to win the title at the Arctic Open tournament in Finland.
This marks Blichfeldt's second tournament victory at the Super 500 level—the fourth-highest tier, ranking below the World Tour Finals and the Super 1000 and 750 events.
It was also Blichfeldt's first win over Ratchanok Intanon following eight previous defeats in their head-to-head encounters.
She laid the foundation for her victory in the first set by turning a 2-3 deficit into a 7-3 lead, never relinquishing the advantage thereafter.
Much like in her semifinal win over Line Christophersen, Ratchanok Intanon displayed great technical skill; however, Blichfeldt countered with a tenacious defensive performance and excelled at winning long rallies.
The Thai player—who became the youngest-ever world champion at age 18 in 2013—appeared to have her game "read" by the Dane at times, though the contest was somewhat closer in the second set.
Blichfeldt remained the superior player, however, and when she pulled ahead from 11-11 to 14-11, her opponent appeared to lose heart.
The match was effectively decided a few points later, resulting in a victory over the World No. 5. For Blichfeldt, the win serves as the perfect build-up to next week's Super 750 tournament, the Denmark Open in Odense.
