Civale, 31, was originally designated for assignment by the A's before the trade happened. The veteran is tossing a career-worst 5.42 earned run average through 15 starts (16 games) this season.
Moffett originally signed with the Cubs in 2025 as an undrafted free agent. He currently has a brutal 8.14 ERA with 37 walks and 24 strikeouts in 21 innings (15 games) out of the bullpen in Single-A this season.
Meanwhile, this won't be Civale's first rodeo with the Cubs. The team claimed him off waivers during last season, and he pitched surprisingly well, posting a 2.08 ERA and one save in five appearances out of their bullpen.
Civale could be a low-risk, high-reward type of move for a Cubs bullpen that ranks 15th in the league with a 4.08 ERA. Chicago are currently 55-43 this season, sitting 5.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers (60-37) for first place in the National League Central Division.
As for the A's, they're on the total opposite trend. They have now lost 10 straight games, which is six more losses than the next (Miami Marlins - 4), after giving up 23 runs to the Washington Nationals on Friday - the second time this season the A's have given up 23 runs in a game (Colorado Rockies - June 14th).
