Spurs midfielder Xavi Simons was stretchered off in Saturday's Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers after sustaining a seemingly severe knee injury.

Simons was battling with Wolves back Hugo Bueno when the Dutch midfielder fell to the ground, grabbing his knee and yelling in agony. The Spurs' medical staff sent Simons back out after initial checks, after which he had to be stretchered off anyway.

While no diagnosis has been given yet, it is feared that Simons has injured his anterior cruciate ligament, thus sustaining an injury that could rule him out for up to a year.

Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi gave a positive update about Simons' health following his side's 1-0 win: "I spoke with the doctor, but they dont know (the extent). They have to see the player on Monday and Tuesday," the Italian said about Simons and Solanke, who was taken off with an injury as well, but walked off on his own power.

"We will see in the next few days. He (Simons) felt pain, but I spoke with him, and he feels better than when he got his injury," De Zerbi continued.

New injury worry for Oranje

Xavi Simons' potential injury could give Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman even more headaches, with the FIFA World Cup just 47 days away. Koeman has had to deal with many absences in recent times, with Frenkie de Jong, Emmanuel Emegha, Matthijs de Ligt, Mark Flekken, and Jeremie Frimpong all missing the March friendlies and potentially more.

PSV captain and Oranje midfielder Jerdy Schouten was already ruled out for the World Cup after tearing his ACL in early April.
