England manager Thomas Tuchel has named his preliminary 26-man squad for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada in June and July, with the biggest omissions being Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Palmer, who scored in the 2-1 defeat to Spain in the EURO 2024 final, is one of two big names from Chelsea to miss out, alongside Levi Colwill, who has not recovered from a lingering knee injury.

Alexander-Arnold has once again been left in the cold by Tuchel, who has not picked the former Liverpool player in any of his squads this year. Under the German, the Los Blancos man has played just 27 minutes and will spend the summer watching the tournament from his sofa.

After Harry Maguire revealed on Thursday that he was "shocked" to not be included in the squad that will play New Zealand and Costa Rica in warm-up matches before the World Cup begins, Tuchel has gone with Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, John Stones and Dan Burn as his four centre-backs. Jarell Quansah has also earned a call-up despite a middling campaign for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany.

In a statement released by England, Tuchel said of his selections: "It is truly exciting and a great privilege to be able to name an England squad for the World Cup. It has been a tough process to decide on the nomination, but I have full belief in this group of players.

"They all deserve their place. The squad and everyone involved with the team will give all we can to make the country proud. We know they are behind us, and we hope for a very special summer."

Much of the conjecture before the announcement surrounded the defence, and Tuchel has opted for Nico O'Reilly and Djed Spence as left-back options, whilst Tino Livramento and Reece James will compete for the right-back position.

There is no space for Crystal Palace's metronome, Adam Wharton, in the squad, whilst Phil Foden will also miss out, after a lacklustre season for Manchester City. Morgan Gibbs-White, despite a late surge of form with Nottingham Forest, has also been omitted.

Jordan Pickford is expected to don the gloves at his fifth tournament, whilst James Trafford and Dean Henderson will provide competition between the sticks.

Up front, there is a surprise call-up for Ivan Toney. Despite playing a part in the run to the final at the Euros two years ago, the former Brentford striker has not played for the Three Lions since moving to Saudi Arabia to play for Al Ahli. He has been in fine form in front of goal this season, netting 42 times in all competitions.

England, who were knocked out by France at the quarter-final stage in Qatar four years ago, will start their campaign on June 17th against Croatia in Group L, before matches against Ghana (June 23rd) and Panama (June 27th).
