Brazil were the first former champions to take the field at the 2026 World Cup, but they disappointingly drew 1-1 against Morocco. The tournament’s third day also saw a historic point for Qatar, the end of a 36-year wait for Scotland, and a surprising Australia outclassing Turkey.

The highlights

Carlo Ancelotti has lost his good humour. Vinicius Junior admitted he "can do better" even after scoring a stunning goal. The Brazilian party in New York turned into anxiety. The reactions from the coach, star player, and fans summed up the frustration with Brazil’s World Cup debut.

For those who hoped that the problems of a cycle with many coaches and little football would magically disappear, the opening minutes against Morocco were already a reality check. The brilliant goal and improved second half weren’t enough against a more organised team.

Brazil 1-1 Morocco was just one of four matches on the day, something that will become routine from now on. So, adjust your sleep schedule to enjoy at least 360 minutes of football every day.

The first big story of Saturday was Qatar’s first-ever point at a World Cup. The Asian side fought back to draw 1-1 in the final minutes against Switzerland, who paid a high price for not extending their early lead.

Another team that finally let out a long-held cheer was Scotland. Held back for 36 years, to be exact. In their first World Cup since 1998, but without a win since 1990, the Tartan Army finally ended their drought, beating Haiti by 1-0, despite a surprisingly strong performance from the Caribbean side.

The surprise was only surpassed by that delivered by Australia. Often underestimated in World Cup predictions, the Socceroos showed that the experience of six consecutive appearances outweighs the talent of Turkey’s young generation — 2-0 on the scoreboard and three points in the bag.

Goal of the day

Vinicius Junior is under a lot of pressure to replicate for the Brazil national team the level he shows at Real Madrid. And he’s already shown that things could be different at this World Cup, with a brilliant solo effort that rescued an otherwise poor team performance - something he did plenty of times for Real in 2026.

As usual, Vini Jr. picked up the ball on the left wing and pulled a rabbit out of the hat to beat his marker and blast past the keeper. He may not have been happy with his overall attacking display, but his wonder goal gave Brazil hope of having a star to chase a sixth title.

Player of the day

No one expected Patrick Beach to be Australia’s starting goalkeeper against Turkey. Not only did he take the spot from captain Mathew Ryan, but he also shone on the pitch and earned his place here as the day’s standout performer. The 22-year-old received a 9.1 rating in the revamped Flashscore system.

Beach saved all eight of Turkey’s shots on target and denied two clear chances from the Crescent Stars. All this with just two previous appearances for Australia’s senior team - and on his World Cup debut.

Patrick Beach plays in the local league for Melbourne City. But after his performance against Turkey, there are already questions about where he’ll be playing in the second half of the year.

Fan of the day

On Friday, Rod Stewart cancelled a show at the last minute in San Diego, California, due to a serious sinus infection. On Saturday, the singer showed up at Gillette Stadium in Boston to watch Scotland’s return to the World Cup up close after nearly three decades.

The 81-year-old artist took a private jet with his two sons and seemed to have his voice back to shout "Go, Scotland!" in a video on social media. Scotland rewarded Rod Stewart’s effort with their first World Cup win since 1990.

And let anyone who’s never faked a sick note for an important match cast the first stone. We get you, Rod.
