Sweden's dismal defence of their 2022 Olympic gold medal continued this morning as they were beaten 9-4 by Switzerland after just seven ends, which mathematically ended their slim hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

The Swedish campaign will be remembered for the stone-touching controversy when they faced Canada, but that aside, Sweden have fallen well short on their bid to retain the title.

Needing a win over top-of-the-table Switzerland and nearly every other result in the remainder of the Round Robin to go their way, the miracle Sweden needed had all but fizzled out after two ends.

The Swiss took two in the opening end, and were lying three ahead of Niklas Edin's final stone in the second, but a promotion take-out only removing one meant Switzerland had stolen two and led 4-0.

Sweden took one back in the third before a blank in the fourth, and when a double take-out from Edin was only 50% successful in the fifth, Benoit Berkel Schwarz-Van had a simple draw to earn his side another two points.

Under pressure, Sweden produced something they hadn't managed for the entirety of the competition - scoring three points from one end - with the Swiss lying three, Edin knocked away the stone in the centre of the house and the deflection carried the other two away, leaving Sweden lying three.

That closed the gap to 6-4, and a take-out from Edin left the Swedes lying one with the Swiss hammer to come in the seventh, but Berkel Schwarz-Van not only removed it but allowed his side to take three points right back.

Sweden elected not to play on, meaning they fell to a 9-4 loss, leaving them with a record of one win and six losses with two matches to play. A maximum of three wins will not be enough to make it to the semi-finals. They take on Norway this evening before finishing their campaign against Czech Republic.
