The Danish women's curling team on Sunday evening took yet another step towards reaching the semi-finals at the Winter Olympics when Italy chose to throw in the towel when they were behind 7-2 with two ends remaining.

Despite playing at home in the Stadio Olympico Del Ghiaccio, Olympic hosts Italy were no match for Denmark's women's curling team on Sunday.

From start to finish, skipper Madeleine Dupont, Mathilde Halse, Jasmin Holtermann, and Denise Dupont dominated the match and won 7-2 as  Italy gave up after eight ends.

Thanks to the win, Denmark has three wins in five matches and is a serious contender to finish in the top four, which is the requirement to reach the semi-finals. Italy has lost all five of its matches.

On Sunday, Denmark took a 2-0 lead in the second end, and after Italy managed to reduce the deficit to 1-2 immediately afterwards, it turned into a one-sided affair the rest of the way.

The Olympic hosts never found a level or initiated tactical moves that could threaten Madeleine Dupont and her team.

Even when the Italians had the last stone, the Danes stole points, and with the score 2-7 in Danish favor in the eighth end, the Olympic hosts chose to cave in with two ends remaining.

Denmark will play a total of nine matches in the group stage before the four best teams advance to the semi-finals.

The Danes' next match is on Monday morning against Great Britain.
