The National Hockey League (NHL) is in full swing now as Thursday night had 11 games. Several matches went beyond the 60 minutes, while comebacks were once again the theme.

It was heartbreak for the Buffalo Sabres in Boston, as despite coming back from two goals down twice, they ultimately fell 4-3 in overtime to the Bruins.

Morgan Geekie and David Pastrnak put the hosts two to the good after the first, before Rasmus Dahlin got the Sabres on the board. Mark Kastelic then restored Boston's two-goal advantage just before the end of the second period.

Buffalo were not going to give up too easily though. They got one back through Josh Doan with 13:00 left in regulation. Six minutes later, they were level, as Alex Tuch made the most of his opportunity.

Unfortunately for the guests, all of their hard work was for naught. Marat Khusnutdinov got the winner two minutes and seven seconds into overtime to push the Bruins over the line. It is a third consecutive defat in overtime for the Sabres.

The good times continue for the Eastern Conference-leading Pittsburgh Penguins, who topped the Minnesota Wild 4-1 on the road. It was not the perfect start for them though, as Kiril Kaprizov gave the hosts the lead midway through the opening frame.

It took a couple of second period minutes for the Pens to tie things through Ryan Shea. It stayed like that until 6:29 in the third, where Bryan Rust put Pittsburgh ahead. A minute later, Benjamin Kindel added a third, putting further distance between the two teams.

An empty net goal rounded up the goals as the Penguins, who have the second most goals in the league so far, take sole possession of top spot in the East.

Elsewhere, an incredible back-and-forth contest ended in the Ottawa Senators' favour in a 4-3 defeat of the Calgary Flames in a shootout. Thrice did the latter lead in regulation, but they could neve hold onto their advantage.

Jake Sanderson's leveller forced overtime, and ultimately, a shootout. Both of the Sens' shooters converted their attempts, whereas the Flames failed to score either of theirs.

The Carolina Hurricanes had six different scorers as they cruised to a 6-2 success over the New York Islanders. In Philadelphia, the Flyers got two goals from Trevor Zegras in a 4-1 win against the Nashville Predators.

Jets hit six, Lightning edge Stars in overtime

Gabriel Vilardi had a big game for the Winnipeg Jets, with the winger scoring twice and adding an assist in a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Vladislav Namestnikov's power play goal less than two minutes in put the Jets in front. While Teuvo Teravainen tied things up later on in the opening period, the guests could not keep up. Winnipeg then went on to rack up four goals, including two from Vilardi, put run away with the result.

While Chicago did get two back to make it 5-3 in the third, it was too little, too late. Kyle Connor added a sixth to put the game out of reach.

Overtime was required in Edmonton, where the New York Rangers hit back from going 3-1 down to beat the Oilers 4-3. J.T. Miller was the hero for his team with his marker coming with 2:11 left in the extra period.

Kieffer Sherwood netted a natural hat-trick for the Vancouver Canucks in their clash with the St. Louis Blues. While the hosts tied things up midway through the third, they would go on to lose 4-3 via a shootout.

Jake DeBrusk was the only player to be successful in scoring his penalty attempt, with the other five players missing.

In a low-scoring affiar at the Benchmark International Arena, the Tampa Bay Lightning got past the Dallas Stars 2-1. Brandon Hagel got the Bolts ahead with just under five minutes left in the opening period.

Adam Erne nodded things up two minutes after intermission to get his team back into it. The Lightning outshot the Stars 58-32, but could not finish things off in regulation. Fortunately for them, Anthony Cirelli got the winner shortly past the midway mark of overtime to end the match.

In the late action, the San Jose Sharks proved too strong for the New Jersey Devils in a 5-2 victory, while the Detroit Red Wings edged the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 after penalties.
