The National Hockey League (NHL) is back in full flow after the Olympics break, as the push for playoff positions take centre stage.

Washington Capitals 3-1 Philadelphia Flyers

The Washington Capitals' first game back from the Olympics break saw them top the visiting Philadelphia Flyers 3-1 at home.

Rasmus Sandin put the Caps in front towards the end of the second period in a tense match, which was fairly evenly contested. It was perhaps no surprise that the Flyers levelled things up inside a minute after the intermission. Noah Cates was the one to convert his chance and restore parity.

In the end, the Capitals found a way through. Trevor Van Riemsdyk go-ahead marker 5:52 before the end proved to be the game winner. Alexei Protas netted an empty net goal despite the guests being on a power play.

Washington's second win in a row puts them two points behind the New York Islanders for the last playoff place in the East. Philadelphia sit six points back of their opponents, and will need to make a run if they are to be back in the conversation for postseason hockey.

Dallas Stars 4-1 Seattle Kraken

A strong showing from the Dallas Stars helped them to a 4-1 defeat of the Seattle Kraken. Wyatt Johnston got the only goal of the opening frame as he made the most of his chance in the final two minutes. The Stars successfully killed two power plays as well, which made the lead all the more meaningful.

The game was wrapped up in the opening 6:15 of the second. Matt Duchene added a second moments into period, before Sam Steele and Johnston added to the score.

Seattle failed to get going until it was a bit too late. They did find a goal through Ryker Evans, but that did not come until there was 13:14 left in the game. They were outshot 50-32 in the 60 minutes, proving their struggles to break down their opponents.

The Stars are now on a seven-game winning streak as they stay second in the West. The Kraken will hold onto the final playoff berth in the conference, though their grip is starting to loosen.
