New York recently traded for their former quarterback, Geno Smith, in a trade deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, who had planned to release the veteran quarterback anyway.
Fields, 27, started nine games for the Jets last season, finishing with 1,642 total yards (383 rushing), 11 total touchdowns (four rushing), four fumbles, and one interception.
The six-year veteran has one year left on his deal and is set to make $3 million this upcoming season.
This will now be Fields' third team in three years after spending 2024 on the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he found himself in a constant quarterback battle for the starting spot with Russell Wilson.
The Georgia native was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 11th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, where he spent the first three years of his career. Unfortunately for the QB, Fields has yet to be able to take off with his career in any capacity since entering the league.
Despite showing promise for the Steelers, leading them to a 4-2 record in 2024 with him under center, they opted for Wilson, who finished the season 6-5 as the starting QB. It's worth noting that in 19 games (15 starts) across the past two seasons, Fields has only thrown two interceptions on 365 pass attempts.
Now, he will be the official backup to Patrick Mahomes on a Chiefs team coming off their first losing season (6-11) since 2012 (2-14).
