The 2025 NFL regular season has officially come to a close, and the season is now ready for the playoffs. With that, our official MVP tracker for the year comes to a close.
After many players came and went in our tracker throughout the season, only two top candidates remain for the award - Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford and New England Patriots QB Drake Maye.
The official award for NFL MVP will be announced on Thursday, February 5th.
So, who deserves the award?
Well, let's compare.
Matthew Stafford vs. Drake Maye
Stafford finished his career season with 259 yards and four touchdowns against the Cardinals in Week 18; Maye put up 232 total yards and one touchdown against the Miami Dolphins.
Stafford led the league with both 4,707 passing yards and 46 passing touchdowns - no other quarterback had more than 35, making it the most in a single season since Aaron Rodgers threw 48 in 2020, the same year he won MVP. In fact, no other player had more than 40 total touchdowns (rushing and passing).
Stafford also won NFC Player of the Month twice, but Maye never earned the award once for the AFC. However, each won "Player of the Week" once.
Maye led all players with 4,846 total yards and posted 35 total touchdowns (ranked fourth-most). His 72.0% completion percentage was the best in the NFL, with no other QB posting above a 70% (Stafford - 65%). Maye also finished the season with the highest passer rating with 113.5 - no other QB had above a 110 (Stafford - 109.2)
Maye's completion percentage was also the highest in a single season in franchise history.
Both quarterbacks threw only eight interceptions this season, tying Detroit Lions' Jared Goff for the fewest among the NFL's top-10 leading passers.
Stafford's Rams finished the regular season with the No. 1 overall offence in the NFL, averaging 394.6 yards per game, and No. 1 scoring offence, being the only team to average over 30 points per game (30.5).
The Dallas Cowboys were the only other team to average more than 390, with the New England Patriots in third with 379.4 yards per game.
Under Maye, the Patriots finished just second to the Rams in points per game with 28.5. It's the first time in the Patriots' franchise history since 2017 that the team ranked in the top three in scoring.
New England finished the season 14-3 - the team's best record since winning 14 games in 2016 when they went on to win the Super Bowl, and their first division title since 2019.
As for the Rams, they finished the season 12-5, claiming second place in a dominant NFC West division. The last time the Rams finished a season with 12 wins with Stafford under centre was in 2021 - when they went on to win the Super Bowl.
They finished the season having the ninth-hardest schedule, in comparison to the Patriots, who finished the year with the easiest schedule of any team in the league.
New England beat the Falcons, while the Rams lost to them. However, four of the five losses the Rams suffered were from teams currently in the playoffs, while two of the three Patriots' losses come from the same - the outlier being the Las Vegas Raiders, who finished 3-14.
Both quarterbacks had incredible streaks at one point this season.
For Stafford, the 37-year-old veteran who came into the season with alarming back problems, set an NFL record this year after throwing 28 straight touchdowns without allowing a single interception.
As for Maye, he tied an NFL record once set by former Patriots QB legend Tom Brady after posting at least a 100.0 passer rating in eight straight games this season. His overall 13 games with a passer rating above 100.0 broke Brady's record for most in a single season.
So, in a final breakdown, here's what each player leads stat-wise (both individually and team):
Passing yards: 4,707 (NFL rank No. 1)
Passing touchdowns: 46 (NFL rank No. 1)
Total touchdowns: 46 (NFL rank No. 1)
Passing yards per game: 276.9 (NFL rank No. 1)
Team yards per game: 394.6 (NFL rank No. 1)
Team points per game: 30.5 (NFL rank No. 1)
Total yards: 4,846 (NFL rank No. 1)
Completion percentage: 72% (NFL rank No. 1)
Passer rating: 113.5 (NFL rank No. 1)
Team record: 14-3 (AFC rank No. 2, NFL rank No. 3)
After a full statistical breakdown without the intricate details (game-winning drives, clutch moments, etc), it will be close, but Stafford remains the favourite.
