After a very cagey opening 20 minutes of the match, it was the hosts that made the vital breakthrough as Giovanni Simeone’s prodded effort from close range narrowly went over the line before Oliver Provstgaard could clear the ball away.
With momentum behind them, the Maroons almost doubled their advantage just a few minutes later through the inspired Simeone, but his fierce shot was palmed away by Ivan Provedel to Lazio’s relief.
The visitors posed very little attacking threat in the first half in which the Biancocelesti’s most promising chance to get on the scoresheet arrived after 37 minutes played, when Reda Belahyane’s rasping shot was blocked a few yards in front of the goal line.

The hosts started on the front foot straight after the restart and were rewarded with their second goal of the night in the 53rd minute.
An excellent delivery from Rafa Obrador on the left flank found Duvan Zapata inside the box, and the Colombian striker made no mistake with his header to beat Provedel and raise the volume inside the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.
The remainder of the game was a pedestrian affair with the hosts never looking in any real danger of surrendering their lead.
The Maroons produced a very solid defensive display overall, with an outstanding block from Enzo Ebosse preventing one of Lazio’s best opportunities to halve the deficit in the second half.
With only eight goals scored from 14 away trips in the league this season, there is no question that Maurizio Sarri’s side lack a killer instinct in the final third when on the road.
With time quickly running out, Alberto Paleari produced an impressive save to deny Alessio Romagnoli from grabbing a late lifeline for the Biancocelesti, and that, ultimately, made sure of all three points for Torino.
Victory for the Maroons ends their run of four games without a win in all competitions, as they move up to 14th position in Serie A. Meanwhile, Lazio remain 10th and must now shift their focus to the Coppa Italia as they host Atalanta on Wednesday in the first leg of their semi-final.
