The third round of UEFA's top two club competitions features heavyweight clashes, major clubs in desperate need of a win and a seasoned Premier League manager's long-awaited chance on the big stage.

Here are the Champions League and Europa League matches you won't want to miss this week.

Tuesday, October 20th

Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid - 21:00 CET

Two of Europe's most in-form sides will face off when Arsenal host Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The Gunners are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League after an excellent start to the season, which has seen them win nine of their 11 matches across all competitions and concede just three goals.

Atleti meanwhile have bounced back from a poor start to their campaign, picking up four wins and a draw in their last five competitive matches, with their 5-2 and 5-1 wins over Real Madrid and Frankfurt respectively showing just how lethal they can be.

The hosts may head into this match as favourites, but Diego Simeone has enjoyed a huge amount of success against English clubs over the years including against Arsenal, who he knocked out of the Europa League in the 2018 semi-finals.

If Arteta can lead his side to victory, it will very much establish them as one of the best teams in the world right now.

Bayer Leverkusen vs PSG - 21:00 CET

They may be the reigning champions, but PSG are far from certain of claiming victory in Leverkusen in the third match of their title defence.

For one, they've been in poor form by their standards, drawing two and losing one of their last four league matches as they deal with an injury crisis that has left them without numerous key players.

Bayer Leverkusen meanwhile haven't lost a match since replacing Erik ten Hag with Kasper Hjulmand, and while not all of the performances under the Danish manager have been great, they certainly seem to be moving in the right direction with three wins from their last four.

The hosts won't be playing for a draw in this clash either having picked up just two points from their first two games of the league phases, games they would have been expecting to win, so this should be an open and entertaining affair.

Wednesday, October 21st

Frankfurt vs Liverpool - 21:00 CET

Liverpool aren't quite in crisis, but they're really not far off.

They've now lost four matches in a row after being defeated 2-1 by arch-rivals Manchester United at the weekend, suffering such a run for the first time in a decade.

If they lose again against Frankfurt, being beaten for the fifth match in a row, people will begin asking questions of Arne Slot, wondering whether last season was just a blip and whether he's the right man for the job now the honeymoon phase is over.

Things would have to get much, much worse for the Dutchman's job to be at risk given the successes of his maiden campaign, but he'll nonetheless be keen to nip the growing negativity in the bud.

He'll try and do so against a Frankfurt side who have just two wins in their last seven, so losing to Hugo Ekitike's former side would be very concerning for the Premier League champions.

Real Madrid vs Juventus - 21:00 CET

The move from a group stage to a league phase has sometimes thrown up fixtures that feel like they should be taking place much later in the tournament, and this is one of them.

Real Madrid vs Juventus is a classic Champions League match-up, with the two giants meeting a total of 21 times in Europe's premier competition. Those meetings have often produced thrillers too, with at least three goals in five of the last six clashes, in which the sides have claimed two wins each.

Juventus are the ones who need another victory more this week, with the Old Lady taking just two points from their first two Champions League games this season and no wins in their last six games in all competitions.

Things are going much better for Los Blancos, who have won 10 of their 11 matches under new manager Xabi Alonso since the start of the season.

If they make it 11 from 12 in Madrid, Juventus will be in serious danger of failing to make it to the knockout rounds.

Thursday, October 22nd

Nottingham Forest vs Porto - 21:00 CET

Nottingham Forest will begin life under their third different manager this season on Thursday, when Sean Dyche steps into the role that Ange Postecoglou lasted just 40 days in.

It's the big job that Dyche has been waiting years for, ever since he first led Burnley to the Premier League in 2014. Never before has he managed a side with so much quality in the squad, and never before has he managed in anything beyond qualifiers in continental football.

It will be a special night for him, made all the more special by the fact that he'll be facing one of Europe's biggest clubs in the form of Porto, who will pose a stern test having bene extremely impressive thus far under new manager Francisco Farioli, winning 10 and drawing one of their first 11.

Dyche has always been adamant that he could deliver at the highest levels if given the opportunities offered to more "stylish" managers, and now is his chance to prove it.
