The UEFA Champions League did not fail to carve up drama during the first legs of the last 16. Here is one stat from each of the eight games that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

19 - Aston Villa had to show some serious resolve in Belgium. In the end, the Villains defeated Club Brugge 3-1 to take a commanding lead into next week's decider.

The Belgians, playing at this stage for the second time in three UCL seasons, suffered their 19th defeat versus English opposition. This comes only a month and change after their matchday 8 reverse to Manchester City.

500 - Real Madrid have a narrow first-leg advantage over city rivals Atletico Madrid. The 15-time champions won 2-1 at home, giving them a good shot at progression. The game was also the 500th European Cup/Champions League game for Real. Their overall record in the competiiton is 302-85-113.

7 - Arsenal ran rampant in Eindhoven, scoring seven times in a 7-1 dumping of PSV. That puts the Gunners virtually in the quarter-finals.

This was the most goals PSV have ever conceded in a European match. However, it was only the second time they have lost by six goals in a continental clash. The only previous occasion came in 1979/80 in the UEFA Cup. The Eredivisie champions also lost 6-0 to Saint-Etienne in the 1979/80 UEFA Cup.

6 - Borussia Dortmund and Lille could not sort out their differences as they played to a 1-1 draw in Germany. That surely gives the Ligue 1 club confidence going into the return leg.

With that said, Dortmund are now unbeaten in their last six knockout-round home games in the UCL. That is an impressive feat for Die Schwarzgelbe. Their last defeat in a UCL knockout round home game came in 2021, losing 4-2 on aggregate to Manchester City.

8 - Inter Milan continue to look very good in the Champions League. The Nerazzurri topped Feyenoord 2-0 in Rotterdam. They are now the overwhelming favourites to advance from this tie.

It is an eighth clean sheet for Inter in Europe. No other team has more. In fact, they are one off from tying the record for the most clean sheets in a UCL season. No one has ever reached double digits in clean sheets within the same season before.

27 - Paris Saint-Germain came up short in their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at home, and the hosts were made to rue their missed chances.

In the whole 90 minutes, PSG mustered 27 shots, the most they have in a UCL game this term. It is also the fifth time that they have had at least 20 shots in a European match this season.

5 - Despite being up a man for most of the match, Benfica fell 1-0 at home to Barcelona. While there is still hope in the return leg, the Portuguese side know they messed this up. It is now five continental home games without a win for Benfica, who will have to change that with haste.

21 - Bayern Munich dominated the all-Bundesliga affair in the UCL, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0. Few expected a one-sided game between the two sides but that's what we got.

The Bavarians are now 21 European home games without defeat, winning 17 of those during that time. It was just Leverkusen's fifth game versus German teams in Europe.
