Olympique Lyonnais breezed into a ninth European quarter-final this century by wrapping up a 7-1 aggregate victory over a beleaguered FCSB, who were beaten 4-0 on the night in France.

Keen to put the tie to bed as quickly as possible, the hosts forced Lukas Zima into a smart early save, as he pounced low to his right to keep out Ernest Nuamah’s curling shot from a delicious Rayan Cherki pass.

They were ahead not long after though, when a turnover in midfield saw Georges Mikautadze receive possession in the area.

Following a stepover or two, he brilliantly scampered past three defenders before sweeping into the bottom corner of the FCSB net.

The European Champions of 1986 needed a fast response, which nearly came when Malcom Edjouma had an effort saved. That was a rare chance for the visitors though, as Les Gones were otherwise rampant.

Nuamah spurned a pair of quickfire chances, firstly hitting the post before sending the rebound wide an empty net in what was one of the misses of the season, but he made amends seconds later when sweeping home from inside the area.

That doubled the lead for Paulo Fonseca’s men, and the manager was surely savouring the occasion, given he has recently started a nine-month touchline ban in domestic football for confronting a referee.

It could have been three before the break too, but Zima thwarted Nuamah, while Cherki blitzed just wide of the top corner with a 25-yard thunderbolt.

Not content with just the one assist, the Frenchman turned provider once again just after half-time, bursting into the area before feeding Mikautadze, who hooked across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.

Indeed, Cherki tormented FCSB right up until his final touch of the game - itself nearly a third assist of the night, via another piercing run that saw him pass to Mikautadze, although this time the subsequent shot went wide.

It was a mere procession in the end, as Lyon secured a sixth win in just eight matches since Fonseca took the reins in late January.

Mikautadze spurned another opening as he looked for a first hat-trick in club football since November 2022.

As for FCSB, this may be just a second defeat in 11 outings, but it was a painful reminder of the gulf between them and the French heavyweights - one made all the more resounding with Nuamah completing his brace by volleying home Mikautadze’s cross in the 88th minute.
