Ikorodu City chairman Sanmi Doherty has dismissed claims that his team could win the Nigeria Professional Football League title this season or secure a continental ticket.

After a challenging start to the 2024/25 campaign, with four losses in their first five matches, the newly promoted side seems to have found their footing in the Nigerian topflight.

The Oga Boys have established themselves as serious title contenders, climbing ahead of Enugu Rangers and Enyimba into third place, just five points adrift of league leaders Rivers United.

A commanding 4-1 victory over former champions Akwa United in Lagos delivered a strong statement to their rivals at the top of the table, but the club’s CEO remains cautious and unwilling to get swept up in their recent success.

The young and insightful sports administrator emphasized his desire for the players to enjoy the game, while repeatedly urging them to demonstrate their ability to maintain consistency throughout the entire campaign.

"I believe people should temper expectations regarding NPFL title ambitions and securing a continental ticket. We're not under pressure to achieve these goals," Doherty told Flashscore.

"We'll keep focusing on taking it one step at a time and see how far we can progress.

"Honestly, we're not getting carried away, nor are we under any pressure to succeed. We're simply focusing on our approach, regardless of whether it’s about relegation or anything else.

"My players are enjoying their game, and I believe that's what matters most for them. I always remind them, 'Stay focused on what you're doing and enjoy it. If you're not enjoying what you do, then it loses its value.'"

Indeed, Ikorodu City boasts the youngest squad in Nigeria's elite division, which is why rival clubs often refer to them as the 'babies' of the NPFL.

However, Doherty asserts that his players have matured and now deserve respect, especially with the recent call-up of dynamic captain Waliu Ojetoye to the Nigeria squad, highlighting the depth of quality within Ikorodu City's roster.

He continued: "We began working with these players a few years ago, and now they can no longer be called unknown or inexperienced. Over the past year or two, they’ve grown significantly and have fully adapted to the system."

"So now, if anyone wants to sign any of my players, they’ll need to bring a significant offer. Currently, my captain is part of the African Nations Championship squad set to face Ghana in a few weeks.

"You can’t tell me that a player representing this country is still unknown, right? My players have matured, they’re ready, and they’re more than capable."

Ikorodu City has steadily built a passionate fanbase, attracting local supporters from Ikorodu, Lagos, and beyond.

Known for its youthful squad and dynamic playing style, the club appeals to fans who admire its underdog spirit and focus on nurturing young talent.

This community-driven approach and vibrant social media presence have fostered a loyal fanbase, the 'Oga Boys faithful', known for their passionate support and electric matchday atmosphere, home or away.

Doherty acknowledges the fans as the team’s biggest driving force and encourages them to continue their unmatched support.

The Chairman added: "They've been incredible. It's like we've had an advantage over other teams, playing 12 against 11. Our fans are truly our 12th man, always there to give us unwavering support.

"Honestly, their support is exactly what we expect from them. I want to take this opportunity to thank them deeply for standing by the team. 'Please, continue to trust the process'.

"And we are working very hard to make sure that we don't disappoint them. We will continue to give them the best. They are the best in this country and are the best in the world. We love them so much."

Unbeaten in their last six matches in the tough Nigerian topflight, Ikorodu City will look to extend their impressive streak to seven. A win could see them surpass second-placed Remo Stars, should they slip against El Kanemi Warriors.
