The Dutchman joined Liverpool from PSV in January 2023 and has scored 55 goals in 159 appearances for the Reds. Last week, Gakpo extended his contract at the reigning Premier League champions by two years, which means he's under contract on Merseyside until 2030.
On the training pitch in the Dutch town of Zeist, Gakpo looked back on his contract extension. "We feel at home in Liverpool," he told press agency ANP.
"When you're under contract with such a big club and you're happy where you are, it's not such a difficult decision to extend your contract. We have lots of top players here. That just makes football even more enjoyable."
The 26-year-old Gakpo won his first Premier League title last season and wants to win even more with the Reds.
"We have now tasted what victory is like at a club like this," Gakpo continued.
"For most of the team, it was their first time. It felt fantastic. We also want to wash away the bad taste left by our elimination from the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. That was painful for us, especially because we were in good form at the time. We want to show that we can go further than the round of 16."
Electric start
With Liverpool, Gakpo had an electric start to the new Premier League season, opening their campaign with dramatic wins over Bournemouth and Newcastle, and beating Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield last Sunday.
"Those were three very intense games," Gakpo recalled. "All the games are very back and forth. You could almost say that counterattacks no longer exist. We run a lot, and at a high pace.
"Sometimes the beautiful game disappears, and it looks more like chess. In that intensity, you have to keep playing football and make the right choices. We work on that every day. Ultimately, we have to win no matter what; that's the most important thing."
