Despite falling behind early, Liverpool romped to a record-equalling 20th top-flight title by thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield, making Arne Slot just the sixth manager to win the Premier League (PL) in their first season at their club.

The stage was seemingly set for a Liverpool stroll over the finish line in front of an expectant Anfield crowd that was at fever pitch long before kick-off.

Spurs, however, had other ideas, as they weathered an early storm and silenced the home crowd by unexpectedly drawing first blood in the 12th minute.

James Maddison’s corner was brilliantly headed back across goal into the corner by ex-Red Dominic Solanke, whose second successive Premier League head-to-head goal was just the third that Liverpool have conceded from a corner in the league this term.

Spurs’ determination to be a thorn in Liverpool’s side subsided just four minutes later as Mohamed Salah restored order, unpicking the Tottenham defence by slotting in Dominik Szoboszlai, who then squared for Luis Diaz to mark his 100th Premier League appearance with a tap-in at the back post.

Relief in the stands soon turned to delirium as the Reds’ rampant high press earned them a turnover on the edge of the visitors’ box, and Alexis Mac Allister applied a devastating finish past a helpless Guglielmo Vicario.

As has so often been the case throughout the season, Ange Postecoglou’s men folded under the pressure, finding themselves two behind before the break. After failing to clear a corner, the Spurs defenders allowed Cody Gakpo to manoeuvre the ball into shooting range and pick out the bottom corner.

The Dutchman ought to have doubled his tally after the restart, but he unselfishly looked to find Mohamed Salah after being found by Mac Allister, and the chance consequently went begging.

The Egyptian had uncharacteristically failed to score in his previous six appearances, but there’d be no stopping Salah come the hour mark, as he was found by Szoboszlai on the counter and snapped his effort in at the near post in trademark fashion.

No player had done more to charge Liverpool to the title, and his fitting place on the scoresheet capped off a perfect afternoon for the Reds.

The scoreline soon became even more sobering for Spurs when Destiny Udogie turned Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross into his own net, which was remarkably the 15th goal Liverpool have put past these opponents across all competitions this season.

Mercifully for the travelling fans who remained in the ground, that’s where the punishment ended as they endured a 16th successive winless trip to Anfield.

A seventh defeat in nine away league matches seemed inevitable before a ball was even kicked due to the emotion behind the Liverpool players, who celebrated a Premier League title with fans in the stadium for the very first time.
