The summer arrival from Brentford is yet to see action for Newcastle after breaking down while in action with DR Congo.
Ahead of Saturday's trip to Brighton, Howe said of Wissa: "We have seen him back on the grass for the first time which is great to see, it is now a case of stepping him up gradually.
"In terms of timelines, it is similar to what I've said - nothing has changed."
He was also asked about Jacob Ramsey's fitness, stating: "He had a couple of training sessions and trained well, but we didn't want to push him too early. He has trained in the break and looks good. I am pleased with where he is currently."
Going to Brighton
Recalling their draw with Brighton last season, Howe admits he sees the point as crucial to qualifying for the Champions League.
He said, "When you look back now, that point at the time was a frustrating one for us but it turned out to be really valuable.
"Brighton are a team we always have tough games against and they are really well managed and have some good players."
On his England pair, Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon, Howe admits he's delighted to be counting on the pair.
On Burn, he said: "I think Dan will do anything for the team. Whatever the team needs, Dan will do his best to deliver it. It's a big change, the physical demands of playing at left-back is a big shift.
"There's a slight adjustment to training and the outputs you give but he is doing really well there."
And on Gordon, he also stated: "He has had a good start to the season if you take away the red card and three-game ban.
"He started the season in the centre forward role and did well. His performances have been good, and he carried that form into England and did really well."
Wilson appointment
Howe also spoke in detail about the appointment of new sporting director Ross Wilson, who arrived this week from Nottingham Forest.
He said, "I have known Ross for a number of years but it is a fleeting hello and you don't get to know them with any depth. He has had various jobs and done really well and it will be interesting to see how our relationship develops.
"First impressions are good, he has fitted in well with the players and staff and he seems a positive person."

Asked how heavily he was involved in Wilson's arrival, Howe says he did have an influence.
He continued: "I wasn't totally away from the process, but I wasn't heavily involved in it. I back Ross' appointment and hope we can work really well together. It's such a big organisation that you need strong leadership through the football club.
"There's so much to do, contract lengths, transfers, there's so much to do, I can't be across all of it. We need to make sure we recruit the right players and make sure we have the best systems in place across every level.
"I always want that position filled. It's such an important position for long-term planning, you need someone who can do that away from the stress and emotion of the day-to-day. He and David are great appointments, and we need strong leadership from those positions."
