Tottenham summer signing Xavi Simons has revealed that Timo Werner convinced him to sign for the club over Chelsea.

Tottenham’s £52 million acquisition of Simons was perhaps one of the club’s biggest signings in recent times as the Dutchman snubbed Chelsea to join manager Thomas Frank and his project in north London.

Simons has now lifted the lid to German newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung on why he decided on a move to Spurs, which was influenced by former Tottenham striker Timo Werner, who played with Simons at RB Leipzig

"He told me a lot about the club's greatness and the fantastic fans. And he said he thought it was the right place for me to learn and improve. Thanks for your trust, Timo!

"I'm happy to be a Tottenham player. Since I was a child, it's been my dream to play in the Premier League.

"The club's vision, the magnificent stadium, the fans, the quality of the team, the coach - it's a fantastic environment.

"I want to settle in quickly in my new home and show why Tottenham signed me."

The attacking midfielder registered a total of 22 goals and 24 assists in 78 games for the Bundesliga outfit over a two-year spell and will be a key player for Frank in their Champions League campaign this season.

The 22-year-old has played at some of the world's biggest football clubs and is now ready to take on the Premier League, which will be a real challenge for the playmaker who has been tipped as one of the next best players in his position.
