A solitary Dušan Vlahovic goal was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Juventus over Genoa at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. The Bianconeri have a perfect six-point haul going into the international break, and are still unbeaten in league games in which Vlahović has scored (W25, D11).

With neither side being breached on the opening Serie A weekend, it came as less of a surprise to see a 0-0 half-time scoreline.

As expected, Juventus looked the more ambitious side in the early minutes, but they couldn’t do much to trouble the Genoa backline, and nearly paid the price on 26’ when Mikael Egill Ellertsson latched onto a pullback inside the box, but he could only execute a weak, easily-saved effort despite having the goal at his mercy.

Juventus rallied, and there were two clear chances for them as the interval closed in.

Firstly, Federico Gatti drew a smart save out of Nicola Leali, who initially looked to have been caught unaware before deflecting it behind for a corner. Two minutes later, Jonathan David uncharacteristically skied a shot inside the six-yard box from a rebound.

The second half’s early minutes were essentially a rerun of those in the first, with Ellertsson again left frustrated when seeing a snapshot blocked inside the box.

At the other end, Khéphren Thuram then had a much bigger moment to forget just before the hour mark, firing wide of the left-hand post from the edge of the box after receiving it on the counter, just before Nicolae Stanciu put a header over the bar.

By now, the game looked like it was opening up, and Juventus once more found an extra gear, finally opening the scoring in the 73rd minute via Vlahovic, as he headed in at close range following a corner from countryman Filip Kostić, making it two goals from as many league games this term.

Unsurprisingly, Genoa struggled to muster a response from there, and Vlahović should have buried them for good five minutes from time, but hesitated too long when receiving the ball inside the box, and found himself thwarted by a block.

There was still time for one last breathless moment, as the final kick of the game saw Caleb Ekuban draw an excellent save from Michele Di Gregorio.

But with the final whistle coming almost immediately after, Juventus will sit pretty alongside at least three other teams with a perfect record for the next fortnight, Genoa will be frustrated after squandering earlier opportunities, and they remain in search of their first H2H win since May 2022.
