The Danish international seemingly injured his his shoulder landing awkwardly as he went head to head with Bernardo Silva with the Portuguese superstar racing through on goal in the 5-2 win against Denmark in Lisbon on Sunday night.
The incident occurred in the first half of an extra-time period but as Danish national team coach Brian Riemer had already made six substitutions, Schmeichel absorbed the pain and stayed on the field for the remainder of the encounter.
Schmeichel, who was spotted wearing a sling in the Lisbon airport on Monday, was taken to hospital immediately after the match along with national team doctor Morten Boesen, to undergo further examination. X-rays did not reveal any damage but Schmeichel will now also undergo an MR-scan.
Riemer explained, "If it had been possible, I would have replaced Kasper Schmeichel because he was injured, but we had already made all our substitutions."
"We talked about Kasper Schmeichel going out, but he didn't want to go out himself. As long as he could stand in goal, it was an advantage for us to have 11 players on the field. The alternative was that we only had nine outfield players if we had to put a man off the field and on goal."
