Clara Tauson on Sunday night crashed out of the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells when she lost in three sets 6-7, 6-4, 4-6 to the young Australian Talia Gibson.

Despite a record number of aces, Clara Tauson crashed out of the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells after a surprise defeat to Australian qualifier Talia Gibson in the third round.

Gibason, who is ranked 112 in the world, won 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, won after a little more than two hours and 40 minutes of play in the California midday heat in the Coachella Valley.

The Dane, who is ranked 17th in the world, had been warned about Gibson's strength after the 21-year-old Australian sprung a big surprise with a straight-sets victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round.

Tauson also did a lot right to win the game. 28 service aces and nine break points are usually statistics that speak in favor of a victory, but the resistant Gibson was at her best in the decisive moments in a generally very even match.

28 aces is a new record for Tauson. Last summer, she made 26 aces in a win over Sofia Kenin in New Zealand. The WTA Tour record stands at 31 aces and was set by Czech Kristyna Pliskova in 2016.

After one of the biggest triumphs in her career, Gibson will now face either compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic or Italian Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16.
