Tallon Griekspoor's woes continued in Toronto, where Tomas Martin Etcheverry eliminated the Dutchman in the second round of the Masters 1000 tournament: 6-4, 7-6 (4).

Since Griekspoor's tournament win on Mallorca, the 31st-ranked Dutchman only managed to beat Andrea Pellegrino in Bastad. Jenson Brooksby beat Griekspoor in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon, and compatriot Jesper de Jong knocked Griekspoor out in the second round in Bastad.

In Toronto, Griekspoor got off to a false start when Etcheverry broke both of Griekspoor's first two service games and raced to a 3-0 lead. Griekspoor salvaged one break to cut the deficit to one, but could not utilise any of the remainig five break points in the first set, which the Argentine won 6-4.

Griekspoor upped the ante in the second set and showed a bigger fighting spirit on service points and in net points, forcing a second-set tiebreak after also fending off four break points and three match points.

Things looked to go Griekspoor's way when Etcheverry was forced to concede a mini-break early on, but the 60th-ranked Argentine fought back and broke Griekspoor twice in a row in the middle of a five-point winning streak, which sealed the deal as Etcheverry won the tiebreak 7-4.

A frustrated Griekspoor smashed his racket directly after the final point and leaves another tournament empty-handed. Meanwhile, Etcheverry prepares to meet compatriot Francisco Cerundolo in the third round of the National Bank Open.
