It's a huge day in Rome with world number one and home hero Jannik Sinner returning from his doping ban, and there are plenty of big games before that too.

00:05 CET - Last up in Rome tonight, Alex De Minaur booked his place in the next round a little while ago with a dominant 6-4, 7-5 win against Luca Nardi.

22:48 CET - Jessica Pegula's poor run of form continues as she is dumped out in Rome by Elise Mertens 7-5, 6-1.

20:51 CET - Jannik Sinner has made a seamless return to tennis and in doing so reminded everyone why he is the man to beat at the French Open later this month. 

The world number one produced a dominant display to beat Argentine Mariano Navone in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

20:43 CET - After dropping down to the Challenger tour and winning the Saint Malo title, Naomi Osaka is back amongst the big guns in Rome. 

And the Japanese star has booked her place in the second week in Rome after a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win against Marie Bouzkova.

19:58 CET - After a bit of a nervy start, Jannik Sinner quickly found his composure and reminded everyone why he is the world number one with a dominant display to take the first set 6-3.

16:50 CET - Women's sixth seed Jasmine Paolini has moved into the fourth round in Rome after beating Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-3

Jelena Ostapenko has also advanced after Laura Siegemund retired from their match before it started.

15:58 CET - In another shock result in Rome, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has been stunned by Jesper de Jong, losing 6-0, 6-2.

15:55 CET - Sixth seed Casper Ruud has advanced to the third round on the men's side in Rome after beating Alexander Bublik 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Earlier, fourth seed Taylor Fritz was dumped out by fellow American Marcos Giron, who edged their clash 7-6, 7-6. Another seed falls on what is turning out to be a dramatic day in Rome!

15:17 CET - The defending champion is out! Iga Swiatek's rotten start to the clay-court season continues, with the world number two losing 6-1, 7-5 to Danielle Collins. The Pole is looking a long way from her best right now.

14:36 CET - Things are going better for Poland's male number one, with Hubert Hurkacz beating Pedro Martinez 6-1, 7-5 to move into the next round.

14:07 CET - Is another upset brewing on Campo Centrale? Danielle Collins has just raced to a 6-1 lead against Iga Swiatek!

13:58 CET - Another high-profile American has fallen in the form of 15th seed Frances Tiafoe, who has been beaten 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 by world number 143 Sebastian Ofner.

13:34 CET - We've just had two big upsets in the Italian capital, with women's fifth seed Madison Keys being beaten 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 by compatriot Peyton Stearns and men's 16th seed Andrey Rublev losing 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to Fabian Marozsan.

In some good news for the home crowd, Matteo Berrettini has claimed a 6-4, 7-6 win over Jacob Fearnley.

12:57 CET - A battle between two exciting youngsters has been won by Tomas Machac, with the Czech player beating Learner Tien 6-4, 6-4.

12:33 CET - The first winner of the day is 11th seed Tommy Paul, who has beaten Roberto Bautista-Agut 6-1, 6-4.
