In the decisive match tiebreak, Eala won 13-11 after Tauson fought back from 4-8 down. The Dane survived four match points in total, but could do nothing about the fifth.
After losing the first set, Tauson came back stylishly and was on course for the victory with a 5-1 lead in the third set. But from then on, the Dane collapsed.
This season, Eala has shown her high level with a semifinal place in the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, but Tauson went into the game as the favorite based on the best season of her career by far.
Returning from a shoulder injury that kept her out of action for a month, Eala showed great composure throughout the opening set against her higher-ranked opponent who complained about the noisy partisan Philippine crowd in the stands.
Eala seemed to suffer from second-set woes once again as her level of play deteriorated drastically in the second set as Tauson settled into her usual stylish stride with great serves and hard groundstrokes from the baseline.
The second set scenario continued in the third set with Tauson well on top against Eala who seemingly had no weapon against Tauson's high pressure tennis.
But down 1-5 in the third set, Eala rallied for five straight games against Tauson who fell completely apart after a referee decision went against her. Tauson did manage to force the game into a tiebreaker where Eala, however, converted her fifth match point to complete a sensational comeback.
