The Philadelphia Phillies signed starting pitcher Walker Buehler (31) to a minor league contract on Sunday.

Buehler was released by the Boston Red Sox in place of their top pitching prospect Payton Tolle, who made his debut on Friday.

The veteran starting pitcher has been having a rough go at this season after signing a $21 million deal with the Sox. Buehler is tossing a brutal 5.45 earned run average and just 84 strikeouts in 112.1 innings through 22 starts (23 games).

However, his numbers are inflated due to his rough start to the season. In his last nine appearances, Buehler has only given up more than three runs just once. Buehler started August with hitters batting .285 against him, which is now down to .272 as he heads to Philly.

After starting pitcher and ace Zack Wheeler was ruled out for the season, Philly was on the lookout for a veteran starting pitcher to fill the hole.

Buehler is by no means Wheeler. But if the former can get back to at least 2023 form when he tossed a 4.02 ERA, he'd be helping out a Phillies team looking to make a World Series run this season.

Philly is sitting atop the National League East division with a 79-47 record with just 35 games left following their Sunday bout against the Atlanta Braves.
